Characteristics of IoT
Internet of Things (IoT) refers to things/objects that are connected to the Internet. There are devices inside IoT through which data is sent and received in wireless networks.
Connectivity
The most important feature of IoT is connectivity. IoT devices and their components such as sensors, compute engines, data hubs, etc. are connected to each other.
IoT devices create an interconnected network via radio waves, Bluetooth, wi-fi, li-fi, etc. New opportunities can be built for the IoT in the market only through connectivity.
Intelligence
There are many such algorithms in IoT, by which it becomes intelligent. Big data analytics and machine learning are used in this so that better decisions can be taken.
In this, useful business decisions are taken using data based on the situation. On the basis of this, we can say that IoT is very intelligent and smart.
Sensing
IoT is not possible without sensors. It is through sensors that the changes in the environment are detected and measured.
We humans can easily understand and analyze our circumstances on the basis of our past experiences. But for IoT, we have to read the analog signal so that we can get proper insights.
We use electrochemical, gyroscopes, pressure, light sensors, GPS, and RFID, etc. to gather information based on a particular problem.
Dynamic Nature
One of the features of IoT is that its nature is dynamic. In IoT, data is collected and converted in such a way that business decisions can be taken. To collect and convert data, the components of IoT should be dynamic in nature. Of course, its state should keep changing.
For example – if IoT sensors have to measure the temperature of a place, then it will have to change based on the location and weather conditions. (There will be a different temperature in Delhi and different in Mumbai)
Scale
IoT can make its scale bigger and smaller according to the requirement. The scale of IoT will be small in homes and its scale will be big in factories and companies. IoT transmitters are devised on the basis of their scale.
Heterogeneity (Diversity)
Things in IoT are based on several hardware and networks. And these devices can be connected to other devices on different networks. IoT architecture provides the facility to connect devices over heterogeneous networks.
Security
One of the main features of IoT is its security. IoT devices have many security threats. It is very important to avoid these threats. In this sensitive information is transferred. This information can be managed and hacked by hackers or cybercriminals. While designing the IoT system, we should take security measures such as – installing a firewall, using VPN, etc.
Communication
Devices are connected to communicate with each other. Communication can be of long-distance and short distance. For example – Wi-Fi and LPWA (lower power, wide area) network, etc.
Scalability
Things are increasing day by day in IoT infrastructure. Therefore the structure of IoT should be such that it can manage the huge development as well.
Integration
IoT integrates many cross-domain models so that the user experience can be improved.
